The right protection is the beginning of food safety. Whether it is a food processing plant, where cleanliness, compliance, and worker safety are non-negotiable, it is more important than ever before to invest in the right personal protective equipment (PPE). As we go into 2025, there are updated safety standards, and supply chain requirements that require you to review your gear.
The following are 10 PPE necessities that every food facility should have in place this year:
1. Disposable Gloves (Vinyl, Nitrile or Latex-Free)
Gloves are one of the first-line defenses against cross-contamination. Vinyl or nitrile gloves are food-safe, powder-free, and both flexible and resistant to chemicals; they are a good alternative to latex.
2. Bouffant Caps and Full Head Covers
Hair containment is still a large portion of food safety compliance. The breathable and lightweight head covers can make workspaces hygienic and provide comfort during long shifts.
3. Poly Aprons
Disposable aprons are waterproof and provide additional safety to employees who have to work with water or other liquids. They are cheap, long lasting and can be thrown out in between duties.
4. Lab Coats and Smocks
Disposable or reusable lab coats will assist in keeping personal clothes out of the production facility and reduce contamination risks due to several safety guidelines in HACCP-certified facilities.
5. Shields and Face Masks
Masks and shields give an additional layer of hygiene whether it is needed to protect the respiration or to control splashes. The face coverings are particularly effective in the cold or ready-to-eat areas.
6. Cut-Resistant Gloves
In knife stations or meat processing jobs, cut-resistant gloves will minimize the risk of injury and help to comply with OSHA. They are essential in any factory that deals with blades or machinery.
7. Eye Protection Goggles or Glasses
Safety eyewear protects the eyes against splashes, powders, and particles. Anti-fog, scratch-free goggles such as the V-Maxx series provide a clear view and all day comfort.
8. Rubber Boots or Steel-Toe Footwear
Slip-resistant, easy-to-clean boots are vital for wet areas. In facilities using heavy equipment or working with pallets, steel-toe protection is often required.
9. Ear Protection (Plugs or Muffs)
Food plants are noisy, and prolonged exposure can damage hearing. Ear plugs or earmuffs help reduce noise exposure and promote long-term worker safety.
10. Disposable Sleeves and Shoe Covers
For added protection in high-hygiene zones, disposable sleeves and shoe covers keep contaminants out and reduce the need for frequent full gear changes.
